The discoveries of Barbara McClintock were and are important to plant genetics. I have written a play about McClintock. It is, of course, called Maize. Learn about McClintock at https://library.cshl.edu/personal-collections/barbara-mcclintock.

You can read MAIZE on the New Play Exchange. https://newplayexchange.org/plays/12008/maizeYou have to create a log-in for New Play Exchange, but they will never send you any spam!

In 2019, Maize won a prize in the Sci-Arts play competition at Louisiana State University. I was delighted that McClintock’s scientific heir, Nina Fedoroff, was able to attend the reading.  The event was a fascinating meeting of the minds between scientists and theater artists. It was a remarkable experience for all involved.

This picture shows Dr. Nina Federoff talking with Cristine McMurdo-Wallis, who played Barbara, Rachel Aker, the director, and Kaitlin Kerr, who played Nina. Yes, Kaitlin played Dr. Fedoroff–who came to the show!

Also in 2019, Maize was a semi-finalist for Mach 33: Caltech/Pasadena Playhouse of New Science-Driven Plays.

Earlier in 2019, Maize received a reading at the Community Playhouse of Greater Lafayette, Indiana.

In 2018, Maize was produced at the student-run Risley Theatre on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, NY.
